One of my favorite things about Texas is that there is no shortage of charming small towns to explore. Sometimes our drive to Fredericksburg routes us through Meridian, but we’ve never taken the time to stop.
We decided to check it out for a New Year’s Eve hike at Meridian State Park. We usually hike at Cleburne State Park or Dinosaur Valley due to their proximity, but wanted to try something new!
Meridian is located in Bosque County and is known as the “top of the Hill Country.”

The park consists of 4 trails totaling just over 5 miles of hiking, ranging from easy to challenging. The Bosque Trail is 2.2 miles long and considered challenging. This trail encircles the lake and features limestone outcroppings and a scenic overlook. There are a few areas that are a little steep, but overall we found this trail to be fun and easy!

It was a chilly morning and we didn’t see any other hikers on the trails. By the time we were ready to leave, we saw a few more cars and we saw some campers. The park offers both primitive and RV campsites.

Besides hiking, the park has many other outdoor activities to enjoy including, biking on the park roads, fishing, bird watching, camping, and boating.
After our hike we went into town to check out the square and have some lunch. Several of the stores and restaurants were closed due to the holiday. We ended up getting coffee at the sweetest little restaurant named Small Town Perk. They offered a nice selection of sandwiches and pastries. They were extremely friendly and the food and coffee were great! Definitely recommend!

Lastly, we walked the square a bit and checked out the Bosque County courthouse.

I’m glad that we finally made the time to check out this small town. We enjoyed our short visit and will definitely be back!
