During our recent trip to Oregon, we spent a day exploring the Willamette Valley wine region, just outside Portland. I’d heard wonderful things about Oregon wine country, and it was one of the experiences I was most looking forward to on our trip.
We decided to visit three wineries in the Dundee Hills area: Durant Vineyards, White Rose Estate, and Furioso Vineyards. Each offered something a little different, from beautiful vineyard views to memorable wines and even some incredible wood-fired pizza.
If you’re visiting Portland and have a day to spare, I would absolutely recommend making the trip into wine country.
A Day Trip from Portland to Willamette Valley
One of the best things about visiting the Willamette Valley is how accessible it is from Portland. Many wineries in the Dundee and Newberg areas are approximately 45 minutes to an hour away, making it an easy day trip.
We chose three wineries relatively close to one another so we could spend more time enjoying each stop and less time driving.
We visited in early October, and the weather couldn’t have been better. The mornings and evenings were cool, while the afternoons were sunny and warmed up enough to make sitting outside especially enjoyable. It was the perfect time of year to explore Oregon wine country, and we were able to enjoy the beautiful vineyard views without the summer heat.
Oregon’s Willamette Valley is especially known for Pinot Noir, and the beautiful rolling hills and vineyards make the experience even better.
First Stop: Durant Vineyards
Our first stop of the day was Durant Vineyards in the Dundee Hills.

We chose the classic wine tasting, which included a Pinot Gris, a Chardonnay, and two Pinot Noirs ($30 per person). We also ordered the smoked salmon dip, which was incredible! We were seated outside overlooking the vineyards, and because it was such a clear, sunny day, we could even see Mount Hood in the distance. The service was wonderful, and we enjoyed the Chardonnay so much that we purchased a bottle to take with us to Cannon Beach later in our trip.

After our tasting, we spent some time exploring the property. Durant is so much more than a winery! The family-owned estate spans approximately 165 acres in the Dundee Hills and includes vineyards, olive groves, beautiful gardens, and a charming farm shop. We enjoyed browsing the shop, and I could easily see spending a few hours here exploring everything the property has to offer.

Durant was a wonderful introduction to Oregon wine country and a great way to start our day. Between the beautiful setting, delicious wine, and relaxed atmosphere, it set the tone for the rest of our afternoon.
Second Stop: White Rose Estate
Our second stop was White Rose Estate, and this ended up being my favorite winery of the day.

We enjoyed our tasting outside on the patio overlooking the vineyards. Our table had a view of Mt. Hood in the distance, perfectly framed by two tall, narrow trees that looked like Italian cypress. It was such a beautiful spot, and I could have happily spent the entire afternoon sitting there.

Of course, the wine was just as memorable. We chose the Discovering Your Emotional Connections tasting, which was $65 per person when we visited. I really enjoyed the tasting itself, and the setting made the whole experience even better.
One of my favorite little details was finishing our tasting with an affogato. After an afternoon of wine tasting, it was such a nice treat and something I hadn’t expected.

Between the wine, the patio, and the incredible views, White Rose was the highlight of our day. If I could return to just one of the three wineries, this would be my choice.
Third Stop: Furioso Vineyards
Our final stop was Furioso Vineyards, which offered a completely different atmosphere from our earlier visits. We did the Casual Wine Tasting, which was $40 per person when we visited.
Furioso has a more modern feel, with contemporary architecture and beautiful views of the surrounding vineyards.

In addition to the wine, one of the highlights was the wood-fired pizza. We ordered the Margherita pizza, and it was incredible. After a day of wine tasting, sitting down to enjoy pizza together was a great way to finish the afternoon.

Tips for Planning Your Own Willamette Valley Wine Tasting Day
If you’re planning a similar day trip from Portland, here are a few things I’d recommend:
- Choose wineries near one another. We focused on the Dundee Hills area, which helped keep driving between stops manageable.
- Make reservations ahead of time. Check each winery’s current tasting options, availability, and policies before visiting.
- Allow plenty of time. Three wineries felt like a good number for one day without trying to squeeze in too much.
- Plan for food. We enjoyed wood-fired pizza at Furioso, which was a great addition to our day.
- Arrange safe transportation. If everyone plans to participate in tastings, consider booking a driver or tour.
- Bring your camera. The vineyards and countryside are beautiful, and you’ll want plenty of photos!
Would I Recommend a Willamette Valley Day Trip?
Absolutely. Our day in the Willamette Valley was one of my favorite experiences during our Oregon trip.
I loved that each winery had its own personality. Durant was our introduction to the region, White Rose won me over with its wine and beautiful outdoor patio, and Furioso was a fun final stop with delicious pizza.
If you’re staying in Portland and enjoy wine, beautiful scenery, or simply exploring somewhere new, I think a day in the Willamette Valley is well worth adding to your itinerary.
And if you only have time for one winery? My vote goes to White Rose Estate.
